I am continually impressed with how much Gracie has learned in school.  Her teacher is amazing and Gracie just soaks up the information.  She has already learned the letters of the alphabet up to G and the sounds they make, she can sight read a few words like “of” and “the,” and she can read and write her numbers up to 10.  Here’s what Gracie has learned about Thanksgiving:

Lately I’m feeling a bit unsafe.

Last Saturday, Gracie’s favorite restaurant, Fazoli’s was robbed at gunpoint and a hostage was taken.  We arrived to eat there just as the cops were interviewing people.  Needless to say we had to drive across town to the other Fazoli’s for Gracie to eat her beloved spaghetti.  Yikes!

Yesterday Gracie’s school was on lockdown as shots were fired across the street.  The gunmen kicked down the door and shot at the man inside.  The victim was a dad of one of our students–he’s okay thankfully. They live in a nice house literally across the street from the high school so we’re all assuming it was an attempted robbery.  All four suspects were caught, but this doesn’t make me feel any safer really.

My world has been shaken–stuff like this isn’t supposed to happen in “this part of town.”  I guess it’s good every now and then to have a reality check, so you’ll remember that bad things can happen anywhere.  Rich or poor, small town, big city–it doesn’t really matter because there are whack jobs everywhere.  I’m thanking God a little more tonight that my children are safe and that the school was so quick to act to protect the kids.  I’m also very proud of the Bethany police department, as they are possibly the meanest cops around and really don’t ever have much to do except write you a $200 ticket for floating a stop sign or eat free meals at the Gyros place down the street.  But then when you need them, and your child’s safety is at stake, they’re on it. I do still love Bethany, I’m just hoping that those two events were an isolated incident.  I just can’t believe my 4 year old can retell the story using the words “robbery” “lockdown” and ”gunpoint.” Sigh.  Sign of the times I suppose.
